Help with MorselMetrics

Straight answers to the questions that come up while cooking, checking a recipe and planning meals.

Recipe links, pasting & ingredients

What can I paste?

Paste a recipe website link beginning with https://, an ingredient list, or full recipe text. For a website link, open the recipe page, copy its address and paste it into “Recipe text or website link”, then choose “Import & analyse”. For recipe text, include the title, servings, ingredients and method where available. Photos and PDFs cannot be imported directly; copy their written recipe text instead. Work with one recipe at a time, up to 100 ingredients and 30,000 characters.

Why does a recipe website link not work?

Some websites do not make their recipe available to the importer, or block access. Copy the ingredients and method from the page and paste them into the same box instead. Choose the recipe’s Australian or US measures before analysing, then check the imported servings. A failed website import does not spend an AI recipe reading.

What happens to the method and extra page text?

The method is kept with your recipe and can help interpret preparation and ingredients that are drained or discarded. Extra page text is set aside under “Other recipe text”; open it to restore an ingredient if needed. Your original recipe text remains available for editing.

Why am I asked to choose a food?

The same name can describe different foods. Raw and cooked rice, sweetened and unsweetened yoghurt, or drained and undrained beans may have different nutrient values. MorselMetrics suggests close descriptions; choose the one you actually used.

Can you match supermarket brands?

The current food catalogue is AFCD, not a complete supermarket product database. Where a brand has no exact entry, a generic food may be suggested. Check its description; this is an approximation of the product, not its verified label.

What if a match or amount is missing?

The ingredient stays visible as a quick check. Choose a suggestion, search a simpler food name, enter its weight, or explicitly exclude it if you did not use it. You can keep working and save a partial recipe. Unresolved ingredients are not included in calculated amounts, and totals are labelled partial.

How do cups, tablespoons and package weights work?

Choose the recipe’s measure convention before analysing: Australian measures use a 250 mL cup and 20 mL tablespoon; the US option uses approximately 236.6 mL and 14.8 mL. Converting a volume or count to grams depends on the food. Estimates stay labelled and editable. For drained packages, enter the drained amount you used.

What happens if a search fails?

Your pasted text and successful matches stay in place. Retry just the affected ingredient. Reopening a saved interrupted import gives you a retry option; you do not need to paste everything again.

Reading the nutrition

Where are all the vitamins and minerals?

Use the Vitamins and Minerals tabs for amounts, reference bars and data coverage. All nutrients includes every imported food component. Select a nutrient to see which ingredients contribute to its total.

What do servings change?

Servings divide the whole-recipe total. They do not change the ingredient quantities. In the planner, prepared servings set how much you make and buy. Individual portions assign recipe servings to household members without changing the shopping amount.

Does “Not reported” mean zero?

No. It means the source did not provide a value. “Partial data” means some ingredients have a reported value while others do not, so the displayed total may be incomplete.

What do the reference bars mean?

They compare the calculated amount with the selected reference profile. RDI and AI labels identify different kinds of reference values; some food components have no applicable reference. A bar is a comparison, not a score or a diagnosis. Use the displayed profile to understand which reference is being applied.

Are planner totals what I actually ate?

They describe your planned meals and portions. Change the meals or servings to reflect what you ate. Check the selected date range and whether the display shows totals or a daily average before comparing numbers.

Household & portions

How do I add my family?

Open Account → Your household. Add a nickname and optional age and reference sex. Me uses your existing account profile. Members have no separate login, and household profiles are included on Free.

How do I divide a planned meal?

Open the meal and use Individual portions. One unit is one recipe serving. For a four-serving batch, you might assign 1, 1, 0.5 and 0.75. The remaining 0.75 stays unallocated. These are manual choices, not recommended child portions.

Why can’t I reduce prepared servings?

The prepared amount must cover the portions already assigned. Adjust those portions first, then reduce how much you prepare.

How do I see each person’s nutrients?

Use Nutrition for below the calendar. Choose a person to show only their assigned portions against their current reference settings. Week and Month show the daily average over days with assigned meals. Prepared meal totals show the full batch; a household has no single personal nutrient reference.

What happens to older meals and archived members?

Older meals remain unassigned until you explicitly allocate them within the current edit window. Archiving keeps existing portions and removes that person from new choices. Historical comparisons use current age and reference settings.

Do portions change my shopping list?

No. Shopping uses prepared servings, so changing who gets a portion does not change ingredient quantities. Copied or repeated meals start unassigned; open them to set portions.

What if another tab changes the portions?

Your draft stays visible. Load the latest portions using the offered button; a copy of your previous draft remains below for comparison. Review the new set before saving again.

Shopping & printing

How do I make a shopping list?

Choose Day, Week or Month in the planner, then Shopping list. Review the dates and meals, add other groceries, and save when ready. Ingredient weights are scaled to the planned servings. Identical food matches combine; different preparations stay separate.

What does Free include?

Full manual planning across complete weeks and dates, shopping lists, saved recipes, household profiles and all implemented nutrients. AI interpretation and autofill have separate allowances; ordinary edits and calculations never spend them.

Can I remove things I already have?

Yes. Use Already got the staples, or open an item to enter grams you already have, change its purchase amount, or exclude it. Excluded items can be restored. These changes never alter recipes or nutrition.

What if the plan changes?

Reopen the saved list or use Check planner and update ingredients. Your extra groceries and edits are preserved. Changed amounts are flagged and unchecked so you can review them. The list stays usable without updating.

How do I print or save a PDF?

Choose Print preview, then Print / Save as PDF. Select your printer or the PDF destination in the browser dialog. Remaining items only is the default. You can include recipe references and compact text. Use A4 paper and check the preview; browser headers and footers are optional.

Why does an ingredient say Check amount?

Its recipe match or amount is unresolved. The original ingredient remains visible rather than being omitted or assigned an invented quantity. Enter the amount you intend to buy. Cooked weights are not automatically converted to raw purchase weights.

Recipes & your account

Do I need an account?

Browse published recipes without an account. Create a free account to analyse your own recipes, save them and plan your week.

Where are my recipes saved?

While signed out, saved recipes stay in that browser on that device. While signed in, they save to your private cloud library. Signing in does not silently upload your device library; use the offered import action when you want to bring recipes across. Export a backup from My Recipes when needed.

Can I save a recipe that still needs checking?

Yes. Your original text, matched ingredients and unresolved checks stay with the recipe. A planned meal uses a snapshot: later edits to the saved recipe do not automatically change meals already on the calendar.

What is included in Free and Pro?

Free includes complete manual planning, three successful single-day autofills per UTC month, and one welcome single-day autofill per permanent account. Consumer Pro adds whole-week autofill. See Plans for subscription availability, pricing and the current automation allowance.

How do I plan the same meal on several days?

Choose Add to planner, then Several days or Repeat and choose your dates. Manual planning across complete weeks is included with Free.
